Golf Update - Ryan Palmer Wins the Sony Open

Ryan Palmer won the Sony Open by holding off three golfers that almost every golf betting fan in the world would have bet on instead of him.

Palmer's 15 under was a stroke better than Robert Allenby's 14 under, two strokes better than Steve Stricker's 13 under and three strokes better than Retief Goosen's 12 under. For his victory, Palmer garnered not only $990, 000 but also 500 points in the FedEx Cup Standings.

Do I expect Palmer to continue to play this well for all of 2010? Not really, but he gets kudos for beating three of the top golfers in the world in Allenby, Stricker and Goosen.

Watch Out for Stricker in 2010

Steve Stricker finished tied for 10 th in his first tournament in 2010, the SBS Championship, and then just finished 3 rd in his second tournament in 2010, the Sony Open.

Everything points to Stricker maintaining terrific form throughout this year. If he can finish well in the Bog Hope Classic, should he play, and then maybe do better in the FBR Open this year than he did last year, then Stricker will go into the Northern Trust Open as one of the favorites.

Stricker finished 2 nd in the NTO in 2009 to Phil Mickelson. Is Stricker fighting for the third best golfer in the world title? It looks like Stricker is aiming higher than that. He could be fighting for the title of second best or best (depending on what Tiger does) golfer in the world title if he keeps this up.

Fowler Misses Cut in First PGATournament

Rickie Fowler missed the cut in his first official tournament on the PGA Tour.

Fowler shot a 75 in the first round of the Sony Open and then a 72 in the second round. He finished ahead of only 10 other PGA Tour players. It was not an auspicious debut for Fowler, but that shouldn't hurt his popularity and he shouldn't let it get to him.

Fowler knows that it's going to take time to get into a groove on the Tour. That's not a horrible thing. Humility can often times help a golfer as much as confidence, even more so in some cases.

Just look at Anthony Kim who has yet to live up to the potential he flashed in 2008 when he won two tournaments. Fowler needs to golf within himself, learn as much as he can, and let his immense talent take him places this year.

The most important thing he needs to do is remain confident without getting cocky.

Zach Johnson Disappoints

ZJ had a shot to win his second straight Sony Open Title this past weekend, but blew it in the third and fourth rounds.

Johnson shot a 65 first round and 67 second round in the Sony Open before shooting back to back 70s on Saturday and Sunday. It was a disappointing finish for Johnson who most golfing fans expected to win the tournament after those terrific rounds on Thursday and Friday.

Johnson's isn't playing terribly with 2 Top 25 finishes in his first tournaments of 2010, but he just doesn't look as strong as he did in 2009. Last year, Johnson shot a 64 and 67 in the final two rounds of the SBS Championship. This year, Johnson shot a 71 and 68.

In 2009, Johnson shot a 66 and 65 to finish the Sony Open. This year he shot the two 70s. Could it be that ZJ just doesn't have the stamina this year that he did in 2009?
